The Lodi Police Department is working to figure out why a stillborn baby's remains were thrown away at a funeral home.

Monday night, police told KCRA 3 video footage from the Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home shows two employees: one employee is in a different part of the building while the other employee is the only person seen throwing away the container with the remains in it.

Police say the investigation will be forwarded to the San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office to determine if any criminal charges will be filed in relation to the wrongful disposal of human and fetus remains.

The baby's parents said the funeral was scheduled for Monday but is now postponed until they receive more answers.

Police said the funeral home reported the missing fetus from their storage area on Saturday, two weeks after video footage shows the remains being thrown away.

Parents Mari Jo Planas and Everardo Munoz said they watched the video Saturday at the funeral home with police by their side.

"That's how they handled her body after she passed away," Munoz said. "Like she was trash. Like she was nothing."

KCRA 3 reached out to the funeral home Monday and received this statement from a spokesperson:
